The weekend after Christmas (Dec 29-31) we will be showing The Boy and Heron. It is the number one movie in North America this weekend. I’m really excited about bringing this movie to the Falkon Theatre. It wasn’t being released in a lot of centres, so I’m really pleased that we are being allowed to show it.
Because you may not know much about this movie by famed director Hayao Miyazaki, I thought I’d introduce you to this film and why I wanted to show it at our theatre.
First a Quick Synopsis: During world war II, and following the death of his mother, Mahito follows the gray heron into a tower, and enters a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself.
Miyazaki makes Mahito’s grief over the loss of his mother palpable, and that grief drives the character’s decisions and shapes his eventual coming of age.
As a survivor of WWII (and its aftermath in Japan), Miyazaki has seen the world at its worst; even as he contemplates the apocalypse, however, his belief in humanity — in young people and their potential to create a better future — has permeated his entire filmography.
You will recognize many of the actors who voiced the characters in this film. Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Willem Dafoe and Mark Hamill.
This is what one reviewer had to say about the movie, “At age 82, Hayao Miyazaki proves once again that he’s our greatest living animator with this haunting tale of a boy on a mystical adventure in WWII-era Japan.”
So you see, I have brought in this movie, not because I know it will appeal to a wide audience, but because this movie is an event. I wanted to provide an opportunity for those of us living in North East Saskatchewan the chance to experience it on the big screen, the way it was meant to be seen.
