Women Talking

Women Talking Poster

This weekend (March 10-12) we will be showing Women Talking. This movie has been nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 95th Academy Awards. This past weekend, the Sunday matinee was a success. Therefore, we will be again running the movie at 8:00PM on Friday and Saturday, and at 2:00PM on Sunday.

It is based on a novel by Miriam Toews from Steinbach, Manitoba. She possesses a unique insight into the survivors’ lives. Toews was raised Mennonite, and has written multiple books about her background. Women Talking, her 7th novel. The novel is loosely based on a horrifying true story about women in a Mennonite colony who were raped persistently by the men in their community while they slept.

The director of this movie is Canadian Sarah Polley. Her diverse career has taken her from child star in her native Canada to an acclaimed filmmaker and performer. Her refusal to conform to Hollywood conventions has allowed her a creative freedom enjoyed by few of her contemporaries.

Review:

Although viewers looking for action will be disappointed, Women Talking is a thought-provoking drama brought to life by an excellent ensemble cast.

Included in the ensemble cast is Frances McDormand. (One of my favorite actresses.) You may remember her from films such as Fargo and Three Billboards.
