In 1985 (I was in grade 10) my basketball coach gave me a pair of first edition Air Jordan basketball shoes. I don’t know if they made me jump higher, but they certainly helped me play with more confidence. Shown are my second pair of Air Jordan shoes that I bought for my grade 12 year of basketball in 1987. They are in pretty rough shape now, but they are a keepsake to those days.
This weekend we will be showing the movie Air. The story of how these shoes came to be. (And consequently, how they ended up on the feet of a shy kid from Northern Saskatchewan.) This movie stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman and Viola Davis. It will be showing May 5-7. On Friday and Saturday the shows will be at 8:00PM. Sunday will be at 2:00PM.
AIR reveals the unbelievable game-changing partnership between a then-rookie Michael Jordan and Nike’s fledgling basketball division which revolutionized the world of sports and contemporary culture with the Air Jordan brand. This moving story follows the career-defining gamble of an unconventional team with everything on the line, the uncompromising vision of a mother who knows the worth of her son’s immense talent, and the basketball phenom who would become the greatest of all time.
The reviews of this movie are extremely positive from both critics and audiences. Audiences score this at 98% positive.
Critics: If there are two things that the ’80s were really all about, it was having a good time and making a truckloads of money. In that sense, Air is the perfect ’80s movie.
Audiences: Ben Affleck and a terrific cast score with Air, which is much more entertaining than any movie about a long-ago business deal has any right to be.

As you might guess, I am extremely excited for the movie this weekend. However, you don’t need to be a basketball fan to enjoy Air.
